How to integrate web services into a single virtual desktop

We live in a world in which we are totally connected all the time, in which new services pop up every day for all types of users, and in which we've created dozens of accounts for managing photos, videos, conversations, tasks and lots of other information that is permanently in the cloud.

Although many of these services provide us with advantages, they can also stress us out. We end up installing dozens of applications on our smartphones, and if you’re a power user or work remotely, the number can increase infinitely, and the app chaos in your life increases with each passing day.

As a result, many people end up abandoning services because they don’t know where everything is. Fortunately, the Internet is full of all types of applications, as well as users who suffer from this same problem, and for this reason, there are different apps that allow you to manage the multiple services that you use every day from a single virtual desktop. Tools that are quite useful and can be tailored to different types of users.

Cloudmagic

Although Cloudmagic is mainly an application for managing email, it can also be used for much more. You can start a session with your Gmail, Outlook or Yahoo account, or with an email account on your own domain, and manage all of the accounts from the application at the same time. However, the app goes much further than this, especially if you use email as a work tool, because it integrates with services like MailChimp, Evernote, Trello, Zendesk, Salesforce and OneNote, to allow you to create context-based cards without leaving Cloudmagic, and with a sharp-looking, minimalist design. Cloudmagic is available for iOS and Android.

Jolicloud

Jolicloud is a tool that’s been on the market for some time, and has a version that runs like a cloud Operating System, similar to Chrome OS. For users who want to manage multiple accounts at the same time, there is a version of Jolicloud for the web, iOS and Android into which you can add all types of services: storage (Dropbox, SugarSynx and Google Drive), news (just Feedly for now), social networks (Facebook, Tumblr and Google+), music (ex.fm and Soundcloud), photos (Flickr and Instagram), videos (YouTube and Vimeo), productivity (Evernote and Pocket) and documents (SlideShare and Scribd). This is one of the most complete tools of the ones covered here; it offers a single desktop with lots of services, and it can really make your life much easier.

Feedient

Feedient is a new service that is still in beta, but that is aimed at managing your social life all in one place. Its column-based design is similar to Tweetdeck, using each column for a single account. At this point, you can add accounts for Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, although there are certain limitations with the latter ones; you can’t upload photos or videos yet, and you can’t watch short videos on Instagram. But it does look promising and it’s worth checking out.

Cooliris

If you’re interested in managing the photos that you upload to the cloud in different services, Cooliris is a good solution. This application is available for iOS and Android, and lets you connect services like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Dropbox, Flickr, Picasa, OneDrive, Google Drive and Evernote, into a single, unified gallery, with a 3D interface, from which you can also share your photos.

Flipboard

Flipboard is quite well-known and popular. This magazine-style news reading app lets you read everything that you’re interested in on your mobile, regardless of whether its an Android, iOS, Windows Phone or Blackberry. Flipboard is basically a feed reader that is beautifully designed and intuitive, which includes social elements, because it lets you add your new posts from Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, Google Plus, Soundcloud and others. Up to 12 social networks. In addition to this, you can customise and create magazines to share with the other users, attract subscribers and follow important publications in the US, Spain, France, Canada, Latin America and several other countries.
