What we expect to see at CES 2014

The international  CES (Consumer Electronics Show) is being held in Las Vegas next week from 7-10 January. This technology trade fair will showcase the new electronic products that will be released in the coming months. Companies also typically use the fair to announce new products, lines of development and agreements with other companies.

Over the last few days, we’ve seen a lot of news that preempts the show and reveals some of the new developments. Although we’ll classify them as rumours until they are officially announced (or not announced) at CES 2014, we will mention a few of them here.

AUDI

One of the biggest rumours is that Google and Audi are planning to install the Android operating system in the German automaker’s vehicles. This means that Android would manage entertainment in the vehicles and would be included in the automobile’s specific hardware, avoiding the need to be “hooked up” to a smartphone. Chip manufacturer Nvidia is also involved in this project.

Another new development that we are expecting to be announced at CES 2014  are the new microprocessors SoC Exynos 6 and Exynos S from Samsung. The SoC Exynos 6 (which would be used in the Samsung Galaxy S5) is a chip with eight 64-bit ARM processor cores. The second chip, the Exynos S, would use Samsung’s 64-bit cores. Apple, with the iPhone 5S, has blazed the trail in the manufacture of 64-bit processeors, followed by Qualcomm, Nvidia and Broadcom.

In regard to Samsung, according to rumours the company may have pushed up the launch date of the Galaxy S5, before sales of the S4 slow. December reports suggest that the Koreans are readying another four or five phones, and that one or a few more may take the stage at CES 2014, along with the tablets Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 , Galaxy Tab 10.1 Pro , Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 and Galaxy Tab 3 Lite. In terms of large screens, Samsung may take advantage of CES 2014 to announce its Ultra HD TV display – 105 inches, curved and 11 million pixels – which it previously said would arrive in January.

The next generation of smartwatches frpom Sony, the BT Wrist Notifier, which will be called the SWR10, might also be announced at CES 2014. Very little is known about the device aside from the fact that it will use NFC and Bluetooth. However, since the SW2 was launched just four months ago, we only expect to hear about the improvements and new developments that it will include. Last December, Sony indicated that it would focus on 4K technology at CES 2014, so we will see what they have to say in this regard.

The final rumour that we have for you, that Asus is planning to launch a dual Android Windows tablet, is possibly the weakest one, but we’ll be watching for this new hybrid, along with all of the other new developments that CES 2014 has to bring. We’ll see if the rumours are confirmed.
